The Dutch pig farming sector is working hard to measure and reduce its climate impact. Reliable data on the carbon footprint of animal feed plays a crucial role in this effort.
On behalf of Nevedi, JoinData has developed a reporting solution that provides feed producers with insights into the quality and completeness of the carbon footprint data they submit for Holland Varken.
The report provides insight into key performance indicators (KPIs) related to feed delivery data submissions, while also making the underlying detailed information available to feed producers. This enables Nevedi members to take targeted action wherever improvements are needed.
The reporting solution was developed in close collaboration with Nevedi’s Feed Data Working Group. Throughout the process, it became clear once again that real-world practices are often more complex than initially anticipated during the design phase. By learning together and refining the report step by step, a solution was created that truly reflects the day-to-day operations of feed producers. The working group has therefore made a valuable contribution to the development of this reporting solution.
Sustainability is becoming increasingly important, and the carbon footprint is a key measurement tool. More and more sustainability initiatives and programmes are looking to build on this information, but this requires the underlying data to be complete, reliable and verifiable. Ensuring the quality and completeness of this data is therefore not a luxury, but an absolute necessity.
The animal feed sector also benefits from having a single, standardised feed delivery message that all parties can use. This prevents data from having to be submitted in different formats for each individual programme or purpose. Not only does this create a more efficient and cost-effective way of working, but it also supports consistent carbon footprint calculations. A joint approach is essential to prevent different methodologies from emerging alongside one another, ultimately leading to comparisons that are not meaningful.
The reports are already being actively used to improve internal processes. As a result, this reporting solution contributes not only to higher data quality, but also to a more transparent and sustainable pig farming supply chain.
Gerben Klein Lebbink, a member of Nevedi’s Sustainability and Innovation Committee, recognises these benefits:
“The reporting solution has already proven its value. Those responsible now have clear insights into areas for improvement and practical guidance on the adjustments needed, with the positive effects already becoming visible. This strengthens the flow of information throughout the entire supply chain.”
Together, we are building a stronger, more transparent and more sustainable supply chain!
