Many dairy farmers share their data with external parties without proper authorizations. There is much room for improvement in this area. This is the conclusion of JoinData based on a survey of over 600 dairy farmers.
Nearly 40 percent of dairy farmers do not know which parties they have authorized to use their data over the years. It is also often not known for which purpose the data is being used and whether the sharing is taking place safely. As a result, only 1 in 3 dairy farmers is confident that their data is handled carefully.
The online survey was conducted by JoinData in February. JoinData is a cooperative that gives farmers control over their data streams and allows data to be shared securely. JoinData ensures that suppliers of farmers are connected to the platform.
More grip
Dairy farmers can get more grip on their data by using JoinData. They have often issued authorizations for the use of data to suppliers, customers and consultants. This improves performance in the chain, but paying extra attention to the easy and safe sharing of data is becoming increasingly important. In the survey, only 40 percent of dairy farmers say they have an overview of their issued data sharing authorizations.
Added value of data sharing
The importance of data sharing is increasing. More than 30 percent of livestock farmers want to get more out of their data. They mainly see added value in useful insights offered by data in terms of feed efficiency, animal health, milk quality and financial overview. According to the dairy farmers, the advantages of sharing data are also the short lines of communication with the advisor and the possibilities of comparing farms.
Online platform
JoinData offers the solution for livestock farmers to share data securely and easily, putting the farmer in control of their data streams. On the online platform ‘My JoinData’, dairy farmers can easily view and manage the authorizations for the sharing of their data. He can activate or withdraw any authorization at any time and set the purpose for which and the length of time his data is shared.
Sener Celik, director of JoinData, is pleased with the results of the study. “This shows the need for secure and easy data sharing. JoinData has been set up for this purpose and all livestock farmers can use it TODAY. Our mission is for dairy farmers to be and remain in charge of their own data.” To make this possible, JoinData ensures safe data transport according to all applicable legal rules, including those concerning privacy. “You can compare our service to a safe highway. As soon as the dairy farmer issues an authorization, his data is transported in a locked truck over this safe highway to the party who is allowed to use the data,” says Celik.
